Being an entrepreneur: from idea to business opportunity
What defines an entrepreneur, how to tell an idea from a real opportunity, and what the feasibility study evaluates before investing.
The entrepreneurial profile
An entrepreneur is someone who decides to start a business and is willing to take on the risks involved; someone able to spot opportunities and mobilize resources to seize them. Successful entrepreneurs tend to share certain capabilities:
- Creativity · Generating innovative solutions from new ideas or new combinations of existing ones.
- Passion and perseverance · Enthusiasm for the goals and the consistency not to quit at the first setback.
- Adaptability · Seeing change as an opportunity and staying flexible in the face of it.
- Self-confidence and optimism · Trusting the idea and projecting a favorable vision of the future.
- Decision-making · Balancing rational analysis with an emotional read of each situation.
- Resilience · The ability to overcome adversity and keep going.
From idea to opportunity
Every business starts from an idea, but to succeed that idea must also be an opportunity. That's why it's worth analyzing carefully. Some conditions that turn an idea into an opportunity:
- The existence of unmet demand.
- A growing market.
- Changes in consumer tastes.
- The chance to improve an existing product with some innovation.
- The chance to enter external markets, for example with a favorable exchange rate.
The feasibility study
Before investing, the pre-investment stage assesses whether the project is viable from several angles: commercial, technical, legal, organizational, economic-financial, and environmental. Feasibility exists only when those viabilities coexist: if the project is technically unviable, it isn't feasible no matter how sound the rest is.
The market study
It determines commercial viability: knowing the market and its forces, proving demand exists, and defining how customers will be reached. It covers consumer analysis, segmentation and target market, demand projection, competitor analysis, and pricing analysis.
