How to write effective prompts for AI tools

A prompt is the instruction you give an AI. Learning to frame it well is the skill that separates a generic reply from a useful result.

Why the prompt changes everything

In generative AI, the prompt is the trigger that activates the system. A poorly framed prompt yields vague, imprecise, or irrelevant answers; a good prompt leads to detailed, coherent, usable results.

The good news is that prompting is a skill, not a talent: it develops with practice and a clear structure. These are the five aspects worth keeping in mind.

The five aspects of a good prompt

Goal · What you want to achieve. The starting point: if it's unclear, the AI improvises.
Clarity and specificity · Avoid ambiguity. State the expected quantity, length, and format.
Context · Give the background it needs to frame the answer to your situation.
Expected results · Signal the output type: a summary, a comparison, a list, a persuasive text.
Tone and style · Match the language to the audience: formal, warm, technical, or plain.

From a poor prompt to a complete one

A vague request like "write about our product" leaves everything to chance. A complete prompt brings the five aspects into a single instruction.

"Write a 120-word description for our logistics service, aimed at small-business owners with no technical background. Highlight time savings and use a warm, concrete tone, with a call to action at the end."

Iterating is part of the method

If the first answer isn't ideal, don't start over: adjust the prompt. Ask it to shorten, change the tone, add an example, or reorganize. The conversation with the tool is iterative, and each tweak brings the result closer to what you need.
